A significant paving project is set to begin today on Upper Union Street in Schenectady, New York. The construction, which will take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., is expected to cause traffic delays and will result in no parking being allowed on that portion of Union Street. Parking will be available on side streets and in a lot behind Trustco Bank and Bruegger's Bagels.
The project, which is expected to be completed by the weekend, will see the milling of the roadway beginning on Monday, with paving commencing two days later. The city and consultants overseeing the project will coordinate with businesses, and flaggers will be in place to direct traffic. There will also be signage indicating road closures and detours, according to a news release from City Hall.
The paving work will impact traffic flow near Howe and Schenectady High School, with Union Street becoming one way with east-to-west traffic flow. A flagger will be positioned in the morning from 7 - 8 a.m. and 2 - 3 p.m. to allow for bus traffic from Baker onto Union Street, according to the Schenectady City School District.
The city acknowledges that the project will pose challenges for commuters, residents, and business owners. However, they believe the long-term benefits will significantly improve the community’s infrastructure and quality of life.
