A Canal Corporation worker is recovering after a fall at Erie Canal Lock 5 in Waterford. The incident occurred on Wednesday (December 18) when the worker slipped off the bottom of a scaffold during maintenance work and fell approximately 10 feet into the empty lock basin. Emergency crews, including the Waterford Fire Department, responded quickly, rescuing the worker with the help of a crane. The worker was alert and responsive and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of the injuries remains unknown.

The accident happened during the annual pump-out of the locks, which is part of routine winter maintenance to ensure the lock's functionality for the upcoming navigation season. The lock had already been drained of water at the time of the fall.

Waterford Supervisor David Ball expressed concern about potential spinal injuries due to the fall. Canal Corporation spokesperson Jackie Schillinger stated that the incident is under investigation, and they thanked emergency responders for their swift action. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge about the cause of the accident.
