The number of flu cases in New York's Capital Region continues to rise, according to the latest data from the state. During the week ending January 18, Albany County reported the highest number of infections with 260 cases, followed by Saratoga County with 210, and Schenectady County with 163. This increase comes after a significant post-holiday surge in flu cases across the region.

The New York State Department of Health has reported a 6% increase in flu cases statewide, with over 32,000 cases recorded for the week ending January 11. Hospitals in the area are experiencing a rise in patients with seasonal illnesses, leading to emergency department diversions and visitation restrictions. Dr. Philip Heavner, Chief Medical Officer at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, noted that about half of the flu tests conducted recently returned positive results, marking a 20% increase from the previous week.

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized the importance of flu vaccines, especially for children and older adults who are at greater risk of serious complications. The Department of Health has launched a campaign encouraging residents to get vaccinated against flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

To reduce the risk of getting sick, experts recommend practicing good hygiene and getting a flu shot. A list of immunization clinics is available online at vaccines.gov.
