The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has initiated work to replace the Route 146 bridge in Guilderland. This $8.9 million project aims to replace the existing 95-year-old bridge with a modern, longer, and higher single-span structure. The new bridge will enhance safety, reduce flood risks, and improve water flow by increasing the vertical clearance above Normans Kill by over three feet.

Additionally, the project includes the construction of a 10-foot-wide shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists. This path will stretch nearly 1,800 feet, connecting the Guilderland Winter Recreation Area to Tawasentha Park, and will integrate with the town's planned trail system.

According to NEWS10 ABC, tree clearing is already underway, with utility relocation set for the spring and bridge construction expected to start in mid-summer. A temporary bridge will be installed to minimize traffic disruptions during the construction phase, which is scheduled for completion by late 2026.

NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez emphasized the project's significance, stating that it will ensure the route remains open and accessible while providing new opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy the area's parks and recreational attractions. Local officials, including State Senator Patricia Fahy and Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy, have expressed support for the project, highlighting its importance for community connectivity and safety.
