Plug Power Incorporated, a manufacturing company based in Slingerlands, plans to lay off 261 employees across its Capital Region locations. The layoffs, set for June 23, are due to economic reasons, according to a notice filed with the New York State Department of Labor.

The majority of the layoffs will occur at the Slingerlands site, where 180 of the 548 employees will be affected. The Latham location will see 79 employees laid off, while the Clifton Park site will lose two employees. None of the affected employees are represented by a union.

CBS6 Albany reports that the layoffs are part of event numbers 2024-0210, 2024-0211, and 2024-0212, as recorded by the Department of Labor's WARN Unit.

Andy Marsh, Plug Power's Chief Executive Officer, stated that these workforce adjustments are part of the company's global transformation strategy to strengthen its foundation for long-term growth. Marsh emphasized the company's commitment to the Albany area, acknowledging the contributions of its employees.

News10 ABC notes that the Capital Region Workforce Development Board and The Job Link are engaged in providing support during this transition. Taylor Kircher, the Department of Labor's Rapid Response Coordinator, is involved in coordinating efforts to assist the impacted workers.
