A recent Marist Poll reveals that New York Governor Kathy Hochul is experiencing low approval ratings among New Yorkers. Only 39% of those surveyed approve of her job performance, while 46% disapprove. Additionally, 53% of respondents do not consider Hochul a good leader, and 57% oppose her re-election bid for 2026. The poll, conducted from April 3 to April 9, surveyed 1,204 New York residents using a mix of online, text, and phone interviews.

The survey highlights broader concerns among New Yorkers, with 64% believing the state's economy is worsening, up from 51% in April 2024. Furthermore, 82% of respondents find the cost of living in New York unaffordable. Economic worries extend to personal finances, with only 27% expecting improvement in the coming year, while 36% anticipate a decline.

The poll also indicates a pessimistic outlook on the state's direction, with 60% of New Yorkers feeling it is moving the wrong way. A majority, 55%, believe the quality of life has deteriorated. Additionally, 58% of those surveyed oppose congestion pricing, viewing it as an unfair tax on commuters.

According to Marist, these sentiments reflect a general dissatisfaction with leadership and economic conditions in the state. Despite the challenges, no candidates have yet announced plans to challenge Hochul in the upcoming election.

The poll also assessed other political figures, showing that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand face similar challenges in public perception. Schumer's approval has dropped to 34%, with 53% suggesting a new Democrat should replace him as minority leader.

NY1 reports that the poll's findings come amidst a broader sense of frustration among New Yorkers, who are grappling with economic challenges and leadership dissatisfaction.
