Governor Hochul Mourns Pope Francis' Passing

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis on Monday (April 21). She described him as a "man of peace and a fighter for justice." Governor Hochul, a Roman Catholic, joined Catholics worldwide in mourning the loss of the spiritual leader.

In her remarks, Hochul recalled meeting Pope Francis, highlighting his humility and love for people. She noted his dedication to helping marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community, migrants, and those in poverty or prison. Hochul emphasized that Pope Francis embodied the values of compassion, humility, and inclusivity.

Governor Hochul also shared a personal memory of receiving a special blessing from Pope Francis during a visit to the Vatican, where she spoke at a climate conference. She praised his commitment to environmental issues and social justice.

In honor of Pope Francis, Governor Hochul ordered all flags in New York to be lowered to half-staff until the day of his funeral. She encouraged everyone to continue his legacy of compassion and justice.
