Bishop Edward Scharfenberger of Albany has announced a memorial mass to honor Pope Francis, who passed away in Rome on Monday (April 21) at the age of 88. The mass will take place on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Albany. Pope Francis led the Catholic Church for over a decade, known for his dedication to the poor and efforts to bring change within the Church.
Governor Kathy Hochul has directed flags in New York to be lowered to half-staff through the day of the Pope's funeral. In a statement, she expressed her condolences, saying, "I join everyone around the world in mourning the loss of His Holiness Pope Francis, as his leadership transcended religious boundaries." Hochul, a Catholic herself, had visited the Vatican last year to discuss climate change at a Pontifical Summit, where she met with Pope Francis.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the Pope's passing early Monday morning. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis was celebrated for his compassion, humility, and inclusivity. He emphasized the importance of caring for the less fortunate and protecting the planet.
Local officials and lawmakers have also expressed their sorrow. Congressman Paul D. Tonko released a statement following the Pope's passing, and President Donald Trump signed an executive order to fly flags at half-staff nationwide in memory of Pope Francis.
The service in Albany is expected to draw many from the community to pay their respects to the late Pontiff and reflect on his lasting impact on the Catholic Church and the world.
