Governor Kathy Hochul announced a significant allocation of $120 million from her fiscal 2026 budget to address issues within New York's criminal justice reform system. Speaking at a news conference in New York City on Wednesday (May 7), Hochul highlighted the growing problem of violent crimes being dismissed on technicalities rather than their merits.

Hochul pointed out that statewide dismissals have surged from 10,000 in 2019 to over 50,000 in 2024, with many of these cases involving repeat offenders. The governor emphasized that the budget allocation aims to rectify these issues and provide support for crime victims. Additionally, the funds will help ensure compliance with discovery laws for both prosecutors and defense lawyers.

This move comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen New York's criminal justice system and ensure that justice is served effectively. By addressing these technical dismissals, Hochul aims to reduce crime rates and enhance public safety across the state.
