In Albany, Jason Guerin, aged 41, was sentenced to up to 12 years in prison on Monday (May 12) for a crash that severely injured a state trooper and a tow truck driver. Guerin, who was under the influence of fentanyl and cocaine, veered off Interstate 87 in Colonie on November 2, 2024, striking State Police Trooper Nicholas Abbondola and tow truck driver Brett Dempsey.
The crash occurred near the Exit 6 and 7 southbound ramp. Both Abbondola and Dempsey suffered serious injuries and are still recovering. Abbondola spent nearly a month in the hospital and may never return to police work due to the severity of his injuries, according to Times Union.
Guerin, who was on probation for a previous DWI, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault in March. During the sentencing, he expressed remorse, saying, "I alone deserve the pain and suffering, and I am so sorry," as reported by WNYT.
The courtroom was filled with nearly 40 New York State Troopers showing support for Abbondola. Guerin's sentencing highlights the ongoing issue of drug-impaired driving and its devastating consequences. According to CBS 6 Albany, Guerin was evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert after the crash, confirming the presence of drugs in his system.
