In Guilderland, quick-thinking bystanders are being praised for their role in stopping a purse snatcher at Stuyvesant Plaza on Sunday (May 18). Around 4 p.m., 32-year-old Matthew Cattell forcibly took a woman's purse and attempted to flee the scene. However, nearby witnesses quickly intervened, detaining Cattell until police arrived.
According to CBS6 Albany, officers responded to reports of a physical altercation involving multiple individuals at 1475 Western Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Cattell being held by bystanders and took him into custody without further incident. Cattell was charged with robbery, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, menacing, and attempted assault.
WNYT reported that Cattell was arraigned in Guilderland Town Court and released under the supervision of probation. Police credited the swift actions of the bystanders with ensuring the suspect was captured and the victim was protected. This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in maintaining public safety.
