After a brief closure due to a bedbug sighting, the Bethlehem Public Library is set to reopen today (May 21). The library was closed on Monday and Tuesday after a staff member discovered a bedbug in the computer area late Sunday afternoon.

According to Geoffrey Kirkpatrick, the library director, pest control was called in immediately, and the affected area has been treated. The library undergoes quarterly inspections using a bedbug-sniffing dog, and the most recent inspection last Thursday did not detect any bedbugs.

Kirkpatrick explained that bedbugs can be brought into public spaces by visitors, and while they can hide in small spaces, no other areas or books in the library were affected. The library's proactive approach is in line with recommendations from the American Library Association, which suggests canine inspections as a preventative measure.

The library announced the closure on social media, citing an abundance of caution, and emphasized that the situation was contained. As reported by WNYT, the library is now investigating if any further action is needed.

The library is expected to resume normal operations today, providing a safe environment for patrons.
