The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) of New York is urging motorcyclists to prioritize safety on the roads. The call comes as data shows a rise in motorcycle accidents, with 193 fatalities recorded in 2023. The GTSC emphasizes the importance of understanding a motorcycle's capabilities, checking weather conditions, performing pre-ride safety checks, and always wearing a helmet.

Mark J.F. Schroeder, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Chair of the GTSC, highlighted the importance of road awareness, stating, "It is so important for everyone on the road to be aware of their surroundings and other drivers or pedestrians." The GTSC advises motorists to yield to motorcycles and provide ample space to ensure safety for all road users.

Motorcycle crashes in New York have been increasing, with 4,658 incidents in 2023, marking a nearly 13% rise from the previous year. Nationwide, motorcyclists account for 15% of all traffic-related fatalities, despite representing only 3.5% of registered vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As the motorcycle season peaks from May to September, riders face challenges such as unpredictable weather and high temperatures, which can affect road conditions and rider fatigue. The GTSC's safety tips aim to mitigate these risks and reduce the high accident rates associated with the season.
