Two 15-year-old boys have been arrested in Albany for their alleged involvement in a violent incident on the Fourth of July. The chaos erupted shortly after a fireworks show at the Empire State Plaza, resulting in four people being shot and a home on Madison Avenue being set on fire by a flare gun.
According to the Albany Police Department, the violence stemmed from an altercation between juveniles. One of the teens is accused of firing a handgun, while the other allegedly fired a flare gun that ignited the fire. Both suspects have pleaded not guilty to charges including second-degree attempted murder and assault.
The incident left a 17-year-old critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head. The Albany Police confirmed that the victims were not involved in the altercation. The fire destroyed two buildings, and police executed a search warrant on Elizabeth Street, recovering a loaded handgun.
The New York State Police released body-worn camera footage showing officers bravely evacuating residents from burning buildings. Superintendent Steven G. James praised the officers for their courage and professionalism. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan condemned the violence, stating, "No one should be picking up a gun to 'solve' any of their problems."
Both teens were arraigned in Albany County Family Court. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure justice and safety for the community.
