Thomas Carson, a 60-year-old resident of Clifton Park was released on an appearance ticket after allegedly threatening Saratoga County deputies with a knife. The incident occurred on Wednesday (July 30) when deputies responded to Carson's home for a separate matter. During the visit, Carson reportedly brandished a large fixed-blade knife, causing the officers to fear for their safety. According to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, Carson was charged with menacing a police officer and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both classified as class D felonies.

Carson's release follows New York's bail reform law, enacted in 2020, which states that the charges he faces are not eligible for bail. As a result, he was issued an appearance ticket and is expected to appear in court at a later date. The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office stated that Carson's actions placed the deputies in reasonable fear of physical injury, serious injury, or death.

The case highlights ongoing discussions around bail reform and its implications for public safety and the judicial process. Carson's court appearance will determine the next steps in the legal proceedings.
