Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin has announced the 2026 budget proposal, which features a ninth consecutive property tax reduction. This plan aims to lower the county property tax rate by 9.1%, bringing the total reduction during McLaughlin's tenure to nearly 50%. The proposal also ensures the continuation and improvement of county services without cutting funding from any programs.

The county's economic growth has facilitated these tax reductions. Since 2018, the county's overall value has increased from $11 billion to $19.2 billion, with sales tax revenues rising from just under $89 million to $125.2 million in 2024. McLaughlin credits these financial improvements to strategic decisions that encourage investment and growth, putting more money in residents' pockets.

The budget proposal also highlights the completion of several modernization projects, including the Reimagine Rensselaer County Facilities Plan, which has enhanced county facilities and services. This plan has improved the county road network, upgraded senior centers, and reopened the Knickerbacker Ice Arena in Lansingburgh.

Despite potential federal cuts affecting local governments, McLaughlin remains optimistic about the county's future. To safeguard against unexpected challenges, the county will maintain an $80 million fund balance. McLaughlin's budget plan aims to provide flexibility, convenience, and safety while reducing expenses for rented or leased spaces.

The proposal is expected to face scrutiny and discussions before approval. If approved, it will continue McLaughlin's trend of reducing property taxes while maintaining and enhancing county services.
