A Schenectady man, Juwan Grier, has pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty after admitting to pushing his four-month-old German Shorthaired Pointer, Oreo, down a fire escape. The incident occurred on June 25 at Grier's second-floor apartment. Oreo suffered a broken leg, jaw, and fractured ribs. Grier took the injured puppy to the VCA Shaker Animal Hospital in Latham, where staff alerted authorities due to the severity of the injuries.

Grier, 27, is expected to serve six months in county jail, followed by five years of probation. As part of the plea deal, he will also be banned from owning animals for 50 years. Sentencing is scheduled for December 16 before visiting Judge Michael Smrtic in Schenectady County Court.

Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable victims, including animals. He stated, "We know that too often, people who would torture and abuse animals are likely to do the same to people, and we should do what we can to deter both behaviors" according to News10.

Oreo has since recovered from his injuries and was adopted through the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society as reported by CBS6 Albany.
