Construction has officially begun on a new amphitheater in Lake George, over a year after the previous structure at Shepard Park was destroyed by fire. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday (October 22), marking the start of a project funded by a $1.5 million grant from New York State's Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). The new amphitheater will feature a redesigned performance stage, improved seating, and full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including accessible pathways and facilities.
The amphitheater, which is expected to open in late spring 2026, will also include a lower level with meeting space and designated areas for arts and cultural programs. New York Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley emphasized the project's role in strengthening the community and supporting the local economy. "The upgrades to this project are a shining example of how Lake George is investing in a space that brings people together," Mosley said.
The original amphitheater was destroyed in a fire on June 29, 2024, which was likely caused by an electrical issue. Since then, local leaders and community members have worked together to plan the new facility.
The new amphitheater aims to restore Lake George's status as a regional hub for music and events, offering flexible spaces for larger concerts and events. Alex Garry, a member of the Shepard Park Amphitheater Committee, highlighted the venue's potential to transform the area into a regional arts destination. "We’ll be able to do some pop-up art shows and really create a hub for cultural arts," Garry told WNYT.
