A public meeting will be held tonight in Niskayuna to discuss the future of Route 7. The Capital Region Transportation Council is hosting a workshop for the Safe on Seven Complete Street Plan at the Iroquois Middle School cafeteria on Rosendale Road from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The initiative aims to enhance safety, mobility, and resilience for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders along the route.

The meeting will feature presentations at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., where draft corridor concepts will be shared. The study area covers Route 7 from the Colonie border at Rosendale/Vly roads to St. David’s Lane. According to News10, the town is encouraging residents to review the proposed concepts and provide feedback to shape the final recommendations for the plan.

The need for the safety plan has been underscored by recent tragic incidents, including the deaths of Schenectady resident Angela Fisher-Reid and A.J. Smullen, son of state Assemblyman Robert Smullen, who were both killed in crashes on Route 7. The town received $139,500 in federal Transportation Planning Funds to conduct a complete streets linkage study of the route. This study began in January and is gathering data and examining existing conditions.

Once the study is complete, Niskayuna plans to use it to pursue state funding for engineering design and construction on Route 7. More information on the plan is available online.
