JANE'S ADDICTION: Band Sues Farrell Over Onstage Fight

Jane's Addiction members Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins sued frontman Perry Farrell on Wednesday morning over the September 2024 onstage fight in Boston that ended their tour and the group. And on Wednesday afternoon Farrell responded with his own suit.

TMZ reports that Navarro is suing Farrell for assault and battery, while all three of the bandmembers are suing for emotional distress, negligence, breach of contract and more. They're seeking minimum damages of $10 million. Navarro's part of the suit says that the fighting continued backstage and alleges Farrell punched him in the face. He states that he found this especially triggering because he's the victim of a violent encounter that occurred during his teenage years. The band's part of the suit says they were forced to cancel 15 nights and put their album on hold because of the fight, which led to major financial losses.

Shortly after news of the suit came out, Farrell's spokesperson told TMZ, “This is yet another clear example of the group uniting to isolate and bully frontman Perry Farrell. The timing of this baseless lawsuit is no coincidence -- it was filed only after they caught wind of legal action coming from our side." Then late Wednesday afternoon Farrell sued Navarro, Avery and Perkins. However, it's not a countersuit. Variety reports that Farrell accuses the trio of orchestrating a campaign of bullying and harassment and that he had no say in canceling their tour and breaking up the band.

Farrell says that the fight was spurred by his frustration over the other bandmembers’ “playing their instruments at a high volume so that he could not hear himself sing without blasting his own in-ear monitors at an unsafe level,” and that Navarro assaulted Farrell and his wife backstage. Farrell said in a statement that "Despite this continued bullying perpetuated by Navarro, Perry’s dedication to Jane’s Addiction and the preservation of its positive impact on the music industry remains unshaken. He is actively exploring ways to address the situation and ensure accountability."

HEART: Happy Birthday "Magic Man"

Heart's "Magic Man is celebrating a birthday. Released on July 17th, 1975, singer Ann Wilson says, "It seems like only yesterday I was writing 'Magic Man' in Vancouver BC. It was the third song written for Dreamboat Annie. (‘Here Song' and ‘How Deep it Goes’ were the first two.) "The first time I heard 'Magic Man' on the radio I was coming back from the grocery store with my dog, Moffa, and I had to pull over and listen ... it was so surreal. I remember Moffa growled a little because she recognized my voice and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from." Ann wrote the song about her then boyfriend, band manager Michael Fisher, and part of it is an autobiographical tale of the beginnings of their relationship. Fisher's brother, Roger Fisher, was Heart's guitarist. “There are so many magic men all over the country, it’s really amazing. Like, onstage, whenever we do that song, this line of guys pushes up to the very front and points at themselves like, ‘Me, me, I’m the magic man! Me!’ So there probably are about 30,000 of them across the country. But the original magic man was the man I was with at the time the song was written, who was indeed a magical person.” "Magic Man" peaked at number-nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Heart starts the next leg of their tour August 8th in Quincy, Washington.
