Pirates’ pitcher Paul Skenes joins Dan Patrick on the Dan Patrick Show to talk about being a unanimous Cy Young Award winner and whether he’d consider following in Shohei Ohtani’s footsteps and start getting himself some at-bats.
Dan Patrick: “As far as like full-time DH, you have to look at (Shohei) Ohtani and is there any part of you that says I could do maybe a portion of that? I could be a hitter, and I could be a pitcher?”
Paul Skenes: “I mean, the portion I could do is stand in the box. I couldn't do anything further, anything like that.
Dan: “[Laughter] I think you're being humble. If I look at what you did when you were in college, you could hit.”
Paul: “Yeah, that was also, I mean, the Mountain West is great…”
Dan: “[Laughter]”
Paul: “The Mountain West and I mean, even the SEC and then obviously the big leagues, they're very different things. So, I'm good, I'm good with what I'm doing right now. I haven't picked up a bat in two years.”
Dan: “Okay. But if your manager says, hey, why don't you go up there and pinch hit?”Â
Paul: “Oh yeah. I'm strapping it on; like cleats, batting gloves, elbow guards, everything.”
