Flags across New York State will be flown at half-staff on Friday (June 6) and Saturday (June 7) to honor Robert Bornt, a Department of Transportation (DOT) Highway Maintenance Supervisor who died after being hit by a vehicle in a work zone on Route 7 in Pittstown. Governor Kathy Hochul directed this tribute to recognize Bornt's dedication and service.

Bornt, who was also the chief of the Hoosick Falls Fire Department, was struck last Thursday (May 29) and succumbed to his injuries the following day at Albany Medical Center. The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene, and no charges have been filed yet, according to WNYT.

Governor Hochul expressed her condolences, stating, "A dedicated highway maintenance supervisor, Hoosick Falls Fire Chief, and a member of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, Robert was an extraordinary public servant." She urged motorists to drive carefully and adhere to New York State’s Move Over Law to protect roadside workers.

Bornt's contributions extended beyond his DOT role. He served as a member of the Hoosick Rescue Squad, was a CSEA regional union president, and coached softball. Calling hours will be held on Saturday (June 7) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hoosick Armory, followed by a firemen’s last call service at 6 p.m. at the Hoosick Falls Fire Station, as reported by Spectrum Local News. Memorial contributions can be made to the Hoosick Falls Fire Department or Hoosick Rescue Squad through the Mahar Funeral Home.
